In June 1799, William Dailey, a free person of color, leaving "on a journey for Philadelphia, having no child of his own, and being much attached to his nephew William Stewart Jr., applied to a gentleman of the Law to draw him a will" in which Stewart would inherit Dailey's property in the event of his death. Upon his return, Dailey was informed that instead of a will, he had signed "an absolute conveyance" Brought lawsuit against father and son
